User Guide to search facility

Full text search

To organize search within the IRPSTRU library electronic resources, use the “Full text search” field located on the right side of the homepage.

Contracted words

To do search by the required part of the word, use astericks * after the specified part of the word. For example, the request select* will result in finding documents which contain words: selects, selector, selectman, selecting.

Search by phrases

To do search by the sequence of words which make up a phrase, put them in double quotes «». For example, "organizational change".

Search by keywords

To do search by keywords, put a plus sign in front of the word if it must be present in the documents. For example, the searching request: "+dog training" means that the word "training" is optional, whereas "dog" is a keyword.

Removing the unwanted words

Put a minus sign in front of the unwanted word in the searching request. In this way you can search a document which does not contain unwanted words. For example, the searching request: "training -cat" will result in finding documents which contain the word "training" but at the same time don't contain the word "cat".

Advanced Search

Advanced Search allows to link several searching fields with logical operators, which considerably specifies the request.

You can limit the search to a certain section by selecting its name in the pop-up menu located in the upper part. Afterwards, select the required element in the "Search type" field and enter a word or a phrase into the field on the right side.

Logical Operators

To build up a more complex searching request use logical operators.

AND - the search is carried out only for those documents which contain all words or phrases that are linked with this operator. For example, request: cats AND dogs will result in finding the documents which contain both the word "cats" and the word "dogs".

OR - the search is carried out only for those documents which contain at least one of the words or phrases that are linked with this operator. For example, request: cats OR dogs, will result in finding the documents which contain EITHER the word "cats", OR the word "dogs".

NOT - the search is carried out by removing from the search the documents which contain a word or a phrase that follows the operator. For example, request: training NOT cat, will result in finding the documents which contain the word "training", but don't contain the word "cat".

Notice: you have to use the searching fields sequentially. If you leave one of the fields blank, the search won't be executed.
